We Oppose Torture

FEBRUARY 2020

Guantánamo Committee:
On January 11, 2020, Valerie Lucznikowska traveled to DC and delivered a speech urging the president to shut down Guantánamo. CLICK HERE to read the entire speech. While in DC, Valerie also participated in the #GitmoClock2020 action organized by our partners at Close Guantanamo.

In The Media:
PT members Terry Rockefeller and Valerie Lucznikowska observed the 9-11 pretrial hearings at Guantánamo Bay for two weeks in January. CIA contractor James Mitchell testified over nine days about his design and participation in torture techniques authorized by the DOJ. In an article published by The Guardian, Terry observed:

” I do think that everyone involved in the  … enhanced interrogation programs is probably going to die [before the legal process ends] – everyone who suffered from it; everyone who was complicit in it – and there will be this eternally lost opportunity to reckon with it.”

Urging Congress to Repeal 2002 Iraq War Authorization: Along with 46 Groups, we co-signed a letter to Congress urging Congress to repeal the 2002 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF):

“Leaving it in place would ensure that it remains susceptible to misuse by this or a future president, paving the way for the Executive Branch to draw the United States into further wars that were not even contemplated, let alone authorized by Congress 18 years ago. This authorization must be repealed, and not replaced.”
