Dear Peacemakers and Friends,

September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows is proud to add our name to the signatures of so many others who clearly understand the vital significance of this campaign to abolish nuclear weapons.

While we are very happy that the United States of America signed the new START treaty in Prague in April last year, we also realize that though it is, in Pres. Obama’s words, "an important first step forward, it is just one step on a longer journey."   It is, indeed, one important step, hopefully to be followed by many more towards international nuclear disarmament.  It is a step on a journey begun more than 65 years ago by the Hibakusha, who continue to lead us to sanity and toward the elimination of nuclear weapons the sole purpose of which is to cause unspeakable harm and death to whole populations of innocent people.

We will continue to inform people of the real costs and dangers of nuclear weapons.  Hopefully governments will come to understand what we already know…. that a superpower does not have to be defined by the size of its nuclear arsenal, or its ability to destroy masses of human lives with the push of a button.  We call upon the leaders of all nations to have the good sense and courage to eliminate nuclear weapons.

May we continue to work together and to support each other on our journey toward the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons and that it be achieved within the lifetime of the Hibakusha.

In friendship and peace,
September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows
