PT Statement in Reaction to the Death of U.S. Ambassador Stevens

September 12, 2012

The heartfelt condolences of every member of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows go to the family of Ambassador Chris Stevens and to the families of other staff of the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, whose lives we value with equal regard. We have known your grief and the pain that lies ahead.

The tragedy in Libya would be heartbreaking any day that such violations of human decency occur.  But on September 11th, we are reminded that the impulse for hate, anger and revenge continues to cause suffering to families directly affected by violence around the globe.

We condemn both the violence that caused the loss of these American lives and the maliciousness of those who put this incendiary film on the internet and who translated it for wider distribution. But base human emotions, while irrational, remain a powerful force throughout the world. We applaud the efforts of the Libyan government to bring reason and calm to a volatile situation with promises to pursue justice for those responsible.
