Gaza Relief Incident

As family members of victims of the 9/11 attacks, who chose to work for peace and justice rather than revenge and retaliation in the wake of that anguished day, we have had the privilege of joining humanitarian missions to Iraq and Afghanistan over the past eight years. It is with horror that we imagine what terror we would feel if we were suddenly overwhelmed by armed soldiers, as has happened to the Gaza- bound relief flotilla this week.

This incident indicates the desperate need for peaceful alternatives to achieve a just solution in the Middle East. Both the safety of the Israelis and the basic human needs of the Palestinians must be insured by this country as well as by the world of nations in its efforts to build an impartial, legitimate and lasting peace.

9/11 Families react to "Photo Op"

Our friends at Families of September 11th have noted that "Images often evoke the thoughts, feelings and sensations of an experience from the past--live events can be even more provocative. We were disturbed to learn about yesterday’s avoidable incident in which the 747 back-up plane to Air Force One flew so low over Manhattan that, according to a witness, it caused buildings to vibrate and windows to rattle. Many people in lower Manhattan evacuated their offices. “It brought back all the memories of 9/11,” a witnesss was quoted saying to the press. This event is especially troubling because several federal, city, and state agencies had prior knowledge that this event would take place but failed to alert the community."

PT Report "Afghanistan: Ending A Failed Military Strategy" Available Online Now

Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, many in the US initially supported the war in Afghanistan because they believed that it would reduce the threat of another attack on US soil, and that it would enable the US to bring to justice Osama bin Laden and others responsible for the attacks. Once the Taliban fell, the war was touted as a success. However, while public attention shifted to the war in Iraq, the conflict in Afghanistan entered a new phase of violence and decay.
