Peaceful Tomorrows Gratefully Acknowledges The Report of The Constitution Project’s Task Force on Detainee Treatment

September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows has been seeking justice for the murder of our family members for nearly twelve years. We have called for fair, transparent trials in American federal courts or an international court of law. Peaceful Tomorrows believes in strict adherence to the rule of law in all cases, but most especially in the legal and judicial processes related to 9/11 because of the unprecedented nature of the attacks and the egregious harm inflicted.

The means by which we as nations and citizens achieve justice is vital. Members of Peaceful Tomorrows have been deeply dismayed by the human rights violations and disregard for the U.S. Constitution that have occurred as part of our country’s response to the 9/11 attacks. No citizen can afford to remain ignorant of the details of how the United States treated people that it held in custody as it mobilized against a global terrorist threat.

To this end, The Constitution Project has performed an essential service to our nation and to the entire global community with its meticulously researched report on the detention and interrogation of terrorist suspects. The Constitution Project has definitively answered two questions in the affirmative:  Did torture of detainees in U.S. custody occur? And, do senior U.S. leaders bear some responsibility for allowing and contributing to the spread of torture? The American public and our government officials must acknowledge these historical facts and consider the recommendations of the Task Force for addressing our failures.

We must work towards a full understanding of what has been done in our name and whether our national security was harmed in the process. Torture is neither effective nor legal, under any circumstances. Those who violated the law must be held accountable. Only by collectively confronting the truth will we restore respect for human rights and the rule of law.
