LAONF 2008: A Project for Promoting Nonviolent Solutions in Iraq

LAONF literally means “no-to violence” in Arabic. “La” means “no” and “onf” means “violence.” LAONF was formed in 2006. It is a coalition of Iraqi civilian organizations, both within Iraq and in exile, who are committed to strengthening and healing Iraqi civil society through non-violent action. LAONF is working to end the sectarian and political violence between Iraqis, so that Iraq can have a stable, peaceful and prosperous future, free from U.S. occupation. Peaceful Tomorrows is working with American and international peace organizations to spread the word about this growing Iraqi non-violence organization called LAONF.

Iraqi Peace and Nonviolence Activists Launch Campaign to Stop Violence Against Women
On Sunday March 8th, International Women's Day, the La’Onf Nonviolence Group will salute Iraqi women with a day of activities and events to build support for a nationwide campaign promoting discussion and action on stopping violence against women.

Today in Iraq, there is a growing movement of citizens pursuing an end to violence, occupation and corruption through nonviolent means. LaOnf is a network of Iraqi organizations and individuals, from all religious and ethnic groups, with different ideological and political backgrounds, who have joined together to promote nonviolence as the most effective way to struggle for an independent, democratic, and peaceful Iraq.

Just back from an extraordinary meeting – in Iraq, attended by Iraqi civilians from all over that nation who are committed to strengthening their country through non-violence, Terry speaks with GRITtv about September 11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows' partnership with the organization LaOnf "No Violence", which convened that meeting in Erbil. The families are currently organizing house parties to screen a documentary about non violent options in Iraq. You'll see some of it here...

First Anniversary

"N" was a schoolteacher in Iraq, and was instrumental in setting up 121 Contact, a program in which American and Iraqi children exchanged emails, to give a face to those living in war as well as allowing the students the opportunity to see how their similarities far outweighed their differences. "N" is currently residing in the U.S., and reflects on her home country...

Refugees? What Refugees?

It is the moral imperative of the United States to swiftly and effectively address the Iraqi Refugee Crisis. Iraqis today constitute the largest group of asylum seekers in 32 industrialized countries surveyed by UNHCR.
